heirs?

Here's an interesting idea that I always wondered but never voiced aloud- how did the Blackadder and Baldrick lines continue throughout the centuries? We never saw either of them married (and with the exception of Blackadder, particularly in series 2 and 4- let's face it, his "wife" in series one DOES NOT COUNT :), we never saw any of them with any women, so how could they have had any heirs to continue their lineages? This makes me quite curious because Edmund (except for series 3) died at the end of each series, so any hay-rolling he took part in would have happened earlier of course...but...if he did have children, wouldn't it have been mentioned somewhere that he was married, had a family, even if they were estranged?

I could accept maybe that Blackadder may have had an illegitimate heir once or twice, but Baldrick? Even if they did have illegitimate children (off screen, yeah, that's the ticket), would they have necessarily have been given their surnames? And in some of these eras, if their heirs were indeed illegitimate, it certainly wouldn't have awarded Edmund his mostly-high-caste positions in the consecutive eras.

So...does anyone have a logical or a Blackadderian reason to explain this?

I have the perfect, most concise explanation...

    It's a TV show.

Duh, Saynt, I know that, but what fun would it be if we just all went, "It's just a show" and never posted anything here! What's the point of having the tribe of Black Adder Lovers if we don't have anything new to say or think about? It's not as though there have been any new episodes in recent years (at least not the last five). Besides, I am determined that people have Black Adder in mind when they think of Rowan instead of that vapid Mr. Bean.

Sorry I was going for funny.

I agree with the previous post. Millions are born illegitimate. They obviously were "backdoor sprogs" or however General Melchitt put it.

They slept around. You don't have to marry, or even date, to have a child.

    Good question, though!

But illegitimate children weren't/aren't always given the surname of the father, and were thought of as "bastards", and then of course their children still bore the stigma of being a lesser class than everyone else. Edmund's first incarnation was in a royal family as a prince (though illegitimate...ha ha!), the second round was still pretty high class as he was still a lord and welcomed at the court of Queen Bess, the third one he had fallen considerably in stature becoming the servant of the Prince, and by the fourth, well, he was just a soldier, albeit a captain. So maybe, if the Blackadder lineage was mostly illegitimate, it would give that the gradual "demotion" of the Blackadder family vis a vis class status would be valid and explained...but in "Back and Fourth" set in 1999/2000, Edmund host everyone at Blackadder manor, the family home going back centuries- and the guy definitely isn't poor, so he didn't fair so badly over time.

Now Baldrick on the other hand...who the heck would breed with Baldrick??? Or was it a bunch of in-breeding (again, would explain SO much!)

        Good points.

After all of that is considered, maybe the whole lineage thing is part of the joke. Because it is so completely impossible for him to have passed down heirs with his lives ending so tragically early, it is merely for comedy value that the line is supposed to exist the way that it does.

Yeh, I have worried about that too.
Blackadder 2 and 3 doesn't seem that unlikely that they would have bastard sons. Blackadder 2 could have had a kid maybe with Molly the prostitute and she would have told him that was his father so he would take on the name, but not the title and that's how by the time blackadder 3 comes along he's a butler and not a lord. Blackadder 3 lives, so he could have gotten married and had a family. The one that worries me is Blackadder 1st because I think he was supposed to be a virgin (at least they say so in the episode with the infanta)Maybe the "Edmund Gene" doesn't have to come directly from Edmund...his brother certainly got around, he could have had an heir that carried on the line.

Yeah...I've wondered about those "Lady Baldricks". I've wondered if they're not just gigantic turnips dressed as women.
