I'm just watching a young(ish) Tony Robinson on an old episode of Doctor in the House (Doctor in Charge series)! I didn't know he ever did that show. Apparently he did two episodes. I remember the character he played from my tweens, but I've never connected him with Baldrick until now. Pretty cool. :) Apparently it was only the fourth TV/film role he ever played (according to IMDB).

{Hugh Laurie} ...would "love to do anything" with Stephen Fry again, his former Jeeves and Wooster co-star.

But he added that he would prefer not to be the frontman of shows such as QI like Fry.

"I'm no good as myself. I don't hugely like me," he said.

Hugh Laurie: Male model?

In a recent episode of Scrubs, Dr. Cox and the interns are discussing the series House, and Dr. Cox refers to Hugh Laurie's character as a "doctor-slash-supermodel," and to Hugh Laurie as a "model." Now don't get me wrong -- I, too, find House drop dead sexy, but my main image of Hugh Laurie is and always shall be as his characters in Blackadder, and I simply can't bring myself to think of the actor who played Prince Ludwig, Prince Regent, and Lt. Barleigh as a "supermodel."

That said, if Hugh Laurie walked in here on his cane with a five o'clock shadow, I would *totally* wreck him. He'd need a wheelchair by the time we were done.

What are the three things that Baldric calls the Beans which Edmund uses to try to teach him how to add?

does anyone have a valid viewable link to this video and song? Youtube had it but was removed for some reason and all roads on the internet only lead to the youtube version.
I am deperate to view it again as it's both a greta song and a brilliant pisstake of 80's pomp and ridiculous music.
Many thanks

Does anyone in here watch House? (I CANNOT get enough of Hugh Laurie.) Did anyone notice the *incredibly* brief Blackadder reference in one of the episodes? I'm not going to describe it because I want to see how many people noticed it. If you did, PM me with the details (*don't* post them in here, or you'll spoil the fun!), and I'll tally and post the results (if there are any). And no cheating (see previous "you'll spoil the fun" reference)! :)

This is an *awesome* documentary about the making of Monty Python's The Life of Brian, and the surrounding controversy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJvJ-dIC3pE

I'm posting it here because it has a *great* appearance by Rowan Atkinson from a spoof news show (it may have been Not The 9 O'clock News, but I'm not sure), where they were spoofing an actual debate (argument?) that had just recently aired between two of the Python members with two religious conservatives that had just recently aired. It was a wonderful, unexpected treat. :)

Enjoy!

Greetings, All -
I'm looking for episodes - preferably the first few seasons - of Black Adder that I can direct people to, to watch. It loses much in the translation, when verbally describing. It isn't currently on anywhere that I can find via satellite or cable. I'd really like to introduce people to Black Adder properly. Any link suggestions? I've even looked on the torrent sites, no luck for the past several months. Would seriously appreciate any help!

Thanks -

When did you first become aware of this uniquely talented actor? I saw him as Touchstone in As You Like It, an open air production in the gardens of Worcester College, Oxford University in the summer of 1977, when I was an undergraduate law student there and he was studying for his D.Phil in Engineering at the Queen's College, Oxford University. He shone. That summer he appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe, was given a TV contract ("Not The Nine O'Clock News") and never returned to his studies.

House (again)- will Stephen Fry appear?

From Ask Ausiello-

Question: Once again you foil my plans to learn whether or not Stephen Fry will appear on his friend Hugh Laurie's show, House! You are my mortal enemy! But I will prevail! Oh yes, I will prevail. And you, my friend, will find out what it is like to lose! — Matt Hood

Ausiello: Actually, you're the one who's gonna find out what it's like to lose, 'cause I finally got around to e-mailing your question directly to House creator David Shore (via two assistants and a publicist) and this was his reply: "Excellent idea, honestly hadn't thought of it. I'm a huge fan of Stephen's. The only problems I foresee would be finding the right part, making it work with Stephen's schedule and hoping that Stephen's accent doesn't mess with Hugh's. Hugh does such a great job with the American accent, but having actual English people in the room with him, talking, scares the hell out of him." Take that, Matt Hood. Mwhahahahahaha!

I just watched "Rat Race" this past weekend. It is sooooo dumb, it is almost painful in some parts, but hilarious in others. Anyway, Rowan plays an Italian fellow with narcolepsy (sp?). He didn't get near enough screen time, but his character was worth watching. Just in retrospect I wish I just fast forwarded through the whole movie just to watch his bits. Oh, and maybe John Cleese too. And maybe the I Love Lucy bus. But that's it. Totally. Dumb movie. Oh- and if some strange woman by the side of the road asks you to buy a squirrel- you'd better do it!

Has anyone ever noticed that as the series progressed, Baldrick seemed to grow dumber while Edmund grew smarter? In the first season, Baldrick's plans, while not overly cunning, were still more cunning than they became in the later seasons. And of course, despite Edmund's intellect, his social standing continued to decrease throughout the series.

Of course, Baldrick did invent a time machine in "Back and Forth," but it seemed to be mostly accidental.

Ok, the other day I was watching Blackadder Back & Forth and right now I've got the new Faces box set, "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar..." in my CD player. What could the connection be, you may ask? Well, it reminds me of the scene where Mr. B. and Baldrick find themselves next to Hadrien's Wall and the Romans are about to be attacked by the Scots and Sir Edmund shouts out, "Last one to leave will be bashed over the head by Rod Stewart's great grandfather!"

Here's an interesting idea that I always wondered but never voiced aloud- how did the Blackadder and Baldrick lines continue throughout the centuries? We never saw either of them married (and with the exception of Blackadder, particularly in series 2 and 4- let's face it, his "wife" in series one DOES NOT COUNT :), we never saw any of them with any women, so how could they have had any heirs to continue their lineages? This makes me quite curious because Edmund (except for series 3) died at the end of each series, so any hay-rolling he took part in would have happened earlier of course...but...if he did have children, wouldn't it have been mentioned somewhere that he was married, had a family, even if they were estranged?

I could accept maybe that Blackadder may have had an illegitimate heir once or twice, but Baldrick? Even if they did have illegitimate children (off screen, yeah, that's the ticket), would they have necessarily have been given their surnames? And in some of these eras, if their heirs were indeed illegitimate, it certainly wouldn't have awarded Edmund his mostly-high-caste positions in the consecutive eras.

So...does anyone have a logical or a Blackadderian reason to explain this?

Historical innaccuracy

I have always been rather proud of the Blackadder series and its attention to historical continuity. Yes, they take vast dramatic/comedic license, and no, one can't realisticaly expect total historical accuracy from a comedy show, however, this surprised me.

In BA2 ep. "Chains", Percy "plays for a while" for Queenie and plays "Ring a Ring a Rosie." Didn't know this, but there are no historical literary references to that song/game until the late 19th Century, and as we all know, BA2 takes place 250+ years previous.
The Blackadder Theme

The sound of hoof beats 'cross the glade,
Good folk, lock up your son and daughter,
Beware the deadly flashing blade,
Unless you want to end up shorter.

Black Adder, Black Adder, he rides a pitch black steed.
Black Adder, Black Adder, he's very bad indeed.

Black: his gloves of finest mole,
Black: his codpiece made of metal,
His horse is blacker than a vole,
His pot is blacker than his kettle.

Black Adder, Black Adder, with many an cunning plan.
Black Adder, Black Adder, you horrid little man.

I believe mine was the one with the actors trying to teach Prince George how to give a speech. I think...hard to remember...I was really stoned at the time. Ha ha!

The words quoted whenever the Scottish play is mentioned are: "Hot potato, orchestra stalls, Puck will make amends."
Because of copyright issues, the episode Nob and Nobility wasn't broadcast in the USA.
Not wishing to feel like he was becoming typecast, Tim McInnerny turned down the chance to appear as another Percy.
Rowan doesn't sport a fine beard in the third series as his girlfriend hated it.

you'll have to scroll down near the bottom, but evidently 1% of Britian's population believes that Edmund Blackadder actually existed. Unfortuately, they don't tell us just which era of Blackadder they believe. Hmm...

I know that they have a lot more shows/ skits out there, but evidently only this compilation is available on video. Ah well... I also got the first set of Jeeves and Wooster, but I'm bummed that that series ends on a cliffhanger but I don't have the second series to watch quite yet. Speaking of which- everyone off my eBay auction for the whole series! That's mine, I tell you, mine, mine!

closing footage of last episode of BA4

ok...theyre about to go over the top...actually they blow the whistle and they DO go over...the scene kicks into slow motion, they play the BA theme in a rather eerie tempo and tone, you see what appears to be an artillery round go off stage right...a momentary fade to black then fade into what I assume to be Flanders with zillions of poppies. Cruel of them to leave it to imagination. Whats your take....what happened?

Ive always gone the more maudlin way...and it *was* Flanders after all...with *crosses row on row that mark our place*

Now a bit lighter...anyone ever think there was some intended political satire to the show...some (not necessarily) messages or pointed opinions?

Frinstance...in the incarnation where BAs dad is the King....where the young BA used to run around in silly looking tights with a headpiece that looked like an inverted flowerpot etc etc...and his dad THE KING was a stark raving looneytoon that one would think had absolutely no business running a country...unless the guy in charge back then really WAS. Then all through BA4...General Melchhowever you spell it...was a screwball responsible for the lives of thousands of soldiers...and in the final episode...Field MArshal Hague just sweeping scores of soliders off of his battlemap into a dustpan....

see what Im getting at?

Atkinson with co-star Natalie Imbruglia in Johnny English
Poor reviews for last year's spy spoof movie Johnny English are being blamed for comedian Rowan Atkinson's current malaise.

According to reports, the rubber-faced Blackadder and Mr Bean star is undergoing psychotherapy in the States. It is believed he will rest for a year before returning to acting.

Sources talking to The Advertiser news service explained Atkinson had become depressed after a critical savaging adding that "he was a highly self-critical perfectionist prone to dark bouts of introspection".

pilot episode- text stolen from blackadderhall.com

The Pilot Episode
Here it is.... The pilot episode that's never been broadcast in the UK. Which is quite ironic because although the comedy is British, I got the tape from an American (Thanks Erik). What makes this different from any other episode of Black Adder? Well read on...
UPDATE: Some bloody nice bloke called Brett emailed me with some interesting nuggets of info - his dad was a cameraman on the filming of the pilot episode. He's kindly scanned in a copy of the shooting script cover (signed by Rowan Atkinson himself) to prove it. It's worth noting the date of the filming, 20th June 1982 which makes Blackadder 20 years old. Although we will be celebrating this next year as it will be 20 years since the first transmission of The Black Adder way back in 1983.

Click here to see the cover of the shooting script

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Written by:
Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson

cast:
Prince Edmund - Rowan Atkinson
The King - John Savident
The Queen - Elspet Gray
Prince Harry - Robert Bathurst
Percy - Tim McInnerny
Baldrick - Philip Fox (still very much alive and doing various bits on TV)
McAngus - Alex Norton
Rudkin - Simon Gipps-Kent
Jesuit - Oengus Macnamara

I've placed the list of other important people at the bottom.

You will straight way notice a few changes to the cast list. The most important one being the actor playing Baldrick - it's not Tony Robinson (image right). Other noticable changes are the actors playing the King, and Prince Harry. The actor playing the King can currently be seen in Coronation Street, and Robert Bathurst was last seen in the ITV programme, Cold Feet. Philip Fox is still around; he was most recently in I'M ALAN PARTRIDGE, KISS ME KATE, BIRDS OF A FEATHER and as The HeadTeacher in THE HEAD TEACHER (one of the great PEOPLE LIKE US series with Chris Langham). He also played an evil Nazi officer to great acclaim in GABRIEL at the Soho Theatre. He was also in the comedy series Watching, which also starred Patsy Byrne (that's Nursie to you and me). It's also worth noting that Philip was 'let go' from THE BLACK ADDER with no explanation - One of the rather less funny sides of the production team according to the man himself who took the time to email me. He would like to say that he definitely isn't dead.

Ok... The pilot episode what's it all about?

It is basically the episode "Born to be King" from the first series, with some noticable differences (apart from some of the actors).

Edmund has the same mannerisms as Edmund Blackadder (in the second series)
He sort of looks like him (without the beard)
He certainly talks like him
The script is fairly close to the broadcast episode. Although there are a few jokes that were kept for other episodes.

Here is the story of the pilot episode courtesy of Steve Roberts

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BLACK ADDER: THE PILOT
"It is Europe, 400 years ago. In Spain, war rages, as Christians from every land fight off the threatening terror of Turkish invasion. The French... are in uneasy peace. But in England, under the tutelage of a powerful king, the Ship of State ploughs a steady course as the court awaits the Queen's birthday and the return of a Scottish hero from the war..."

The show then opens with Prince Henry, the King, and the Queen discussing the war with the Spanish. They hope it will soon be over so they can get on with fighting the French. The Queen is in high spirits, as it is her birthday and she has been given the county of Shropshire as a present.

Prince Edmund is in his chambers with his servants Percy and Baldrick. He is clearly unhappy about the task he has been given, which is to arrange the festivities for both the Queen's birthday and the return of the Scottish hero McAngus to the court. He refers to his brother Henry as "the bastard." Baldrick points out that if Henry actually was a bastard, Edmund would one day be King. When he finds out that the eunuchs scheduled to appear have cancelled, Edmund decides to have them executed. ("This is a Royal command performance -- there are only two options. Either you do it, or you don't do it. If you do it, you don't get paid. If you don't do it, you get beheaded.")

Later -- the main hall. The Scottish hero, McAngus, appears. It is clear that Edmund treats him with contempt, feeling that slaughtering a few Turks is not very heroic. He is stunned when the King gives all Edmund's lands in Scotland to McAngus.

Edmund's Chambers -- Edmund is furious. He, Percy and Baldrick plot to kill McAngus. Percy warns that the King will cut Edmund off if he thinks he has deliberately killed McAngus, so they agree to make it look like an accident. Baldrick suggests putting McAngus's head in the mouth of a cannon and firing it, but Edmund dismisses this as feeble.

McAngus's Room -- Edmund enters looking for McAngus, but the room is empty. He finds a spiked Turkish helmet on the table and tries it on, but it gets stuck. Hearing someone approaching, he hides behind the door. McAngus enters, followed by the Queen. McAngus tells the Queen that his father sends her his regards -- they used to know each other very well! The Queen leaves, and McAngus discovers Edmund. They manage to get the helmet off, and Edmund invites McAngus to act as the Scotsman in the play "The Death of the Scotsman," to be performed for the Queens birthday.

The main hall, later that evening -- They are about to start the play, when they discover that McAngus is drunk. Percy and Baldrick begin the play, and are later joined by Edmund and McAngus. In the play, McAngus insults the Queen, then stabs Edmund with a fake telescopic sword. He is sentenced to be hung from the gallows. Leaving the stage, Edmund instructs Percy and Baldrick to remove the safety hook from the gallows, and warns them that whatever happens, if the Scotsman lives, they will die.

Off-stage, McAngus tells Edmund about hidden love letters from the Queen to McAngus's father, casting doubts on the lineage of Prince Henry. McAngus is back on stage about to be hanged before Edmund realises he needs him alive to show him the letters. He tries to stop the hanging from off-stage by cutting the noose with a spear, but it fails, so in a last-ditch attempt, he throws a sheet over his head, and enters the stage as the ghost of the Prince. He pleads mercy for the Scotsman, but Percy and Baldrick, mindful of his previous threat, are determined to carry out the execution. A comic fight sequence ensues, which ends with Edmund inadvertently hanging McAngus himself, but then holding him up to stop him choking.

Later, in McAngus's room -- A gleeful Edmund is shown the love letters that his mother wrote. He instructs Baldrick to have the court assembled in the morning.

The main hall, the following morning -- Edmund tells everyone about the letters, which are dated November and December 1526. He begins to falter as he realises that this was nine months AFTER Henry's birth, but nine months BEFORE his own -- it is he who is the bastard, not Henry! McAngus is as surprised at this revelation as Edmund is. Edmund tries to pretend that McAngus has forged the letters, and challenges him to a duel -- to the death. Edmund instructs Baldrick to get the fake telescopic sword, but Percy gives Edmund the fake instead. There is a big fight, which culminates in Edmund stabbing McAngus with the fake sword. On finding out that Edmund tried to set him up with the fake sword, McAngus is furious and is about to kill Edmund, when the King begs him for clemency. McAngus agrees, but only if Edmund begs for mercy, which he does.

Later, in the King's chambers -- The King, Queen and Henry are discussing the letters, which apparently turned out to be French forgeries. Edmund and McAngus are now supposed to be the best of friends. However, up on the tower, McAngus is peering down the barrel of a large cannon, at Edmund's request. Back in the King's chambers, a loud bang is heard. Edmund comes rushing in to announce that there has been a terrible accident -- as everyone else leaves the room, he turns to the camera, and waves both fists in triumph...

The final shot is of the family coat of arms, inscribed with the motto:
Veni Vidi Castratavi Illegitimos.

This very roughly translates as:
I came, I saw, I castrated the bastards!
